As a new year unfolds, many of us feel the weight of unfulfilled promises. This year, I faced a stark realization: I was devoting too much energy to mindless content, unstable relationships, and a work life that was draining me. I realized I had lost sight of the important parts of my life—my faith, my husband, my daughter, and our cherished pets.

My mental space felt cluttered, leading to irritability and exhaustion. Social media platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook began to feel like traps, pulling me away from my true self. I saw many people caught in a cycle of superficiality, defining their worth by likes and aesthetics rather than who they truly are.

Now is an essential time for women to stand firm in their identities. We often make excuses for the chaos around us, but I believe the call to fast—redirecting our focus to what matters—is stronger than ever. I felt a profound pull to step away from social media, sensing it was my chance for a deeper purpose. Months later, I can say this journey has transformed my life in remarkable ways.

The Awakening

By stepping back from the constant buzz of social media, I’m starting to rediscover who I am. Each day serves as a step towards reclaiming my true self. This time for reflection has opened my eyes, allowing me to embrace hobbies and talents I had neglected.

Investing time in my passions has reinvigorated my creativity and joy. Instead of scrolling through perfect lives online, I focus on quality interactions with my family. From painting to cooking new recipes, I’m immersing myself in activities that uplift my spirit.

In freeing myself from distractions, I have noticed a marked increase in my energy levels, allowing me to truly engage with my family. The chaos once surrounding me has been replaced with a clearer sense of purpose, shifting me from a spectator to an active participant in life.

Letting Go of Validation

A significant part of this journey has involved recognizing that my life does not need to be publicly documented. My smiles, family milestones, and even our struggles are best shared in the intimacy of my home, not in the digital realm.

My family should enjoy the fullness of my heart—the joy and the vulnerability. This understanding has helped me redefine my sense of value. Instead of looking for approval from a digital audience, I now prioritize intimacy in my real-life relationships.

Since making this change, the emotional burden I once carried has transformed into a sense of lightness. I feel freer, more present, and more engaged with the people I love.

Fasting from Distraction

If you choose to embark on a fasting journey—whether from social media, mindless entertainment, or toxic relationships—you are in for a transformation. The emptiness that once weighed you down can be filled with hope, purpose, and a renewed sense of destiny.

While it might be tempting to seek out distractions, I’ve found that replacing mindless scrolling with enriching activities has been beneficial. For instance, turning to the Bible has provided me with wisdom and insights that challenge me to grow.

This period of fasting has led to significant personal development. I see it as a renaissance, prompting me to engage more fully with life on my own terms.

Practical Steps to Begin Your Journey

If you're thinking about starting your own journey of fasting with intention, consider these practical steps:

  1. Set Clear Intentions: Think about which areas of your life need renewal. Is it your faith, family, or self-identity?

  2. Limit Your Social Media Use: Establish specific times to check your accounts, and dedicate the remainder of your time to engaging in fulfilling activities.

  3. Rediscover Old Hobbies: Dust off that old paintbrush, guitar, or book. Revive your love for activities you once enjoyed.

  4. Engage with Nature: Spend time outdoors—go for a walk, tend to your garden, or explore a local park. Nature can ground and refresh your perspective.

  5. Connect with Loved Ones: Plan quality time with friends and family. Simple activities, like cooking together or having a game night, can strengthen bonds.

  6. Read and Reflect: Start with the Bible or a book that resonates with you. Let its wisdom inspire your thoughts and promote growth.

Embracing Transformation

Fasting with conviction goes beyond merely refraining from certain activities; it’s about redefining your values and reigniting your spirit. My journey has been one of rediscovery, where I have learned to focus on what is truly meaningful. As I embrace this process, I encourage you to listen closely to your heart.

Let this time of renewal replace distraction with purpose and superficiality with authenticity. While the world may be full of noise, within each of us lies a reservoir of beauty waiting to be uncovered. Together, let's take this transformative journey and reclaim our essence—one meaningful moment at a time.

Healing and self-discovery are attainable, and the time to start is now.

Later Days,

Faithful & Faceless
